Curatorial Narrative The Altar pieces and decorations Pl.002 from 1573 presents itself as an exemplary case of Classical style, executed with the utmost finesse by an anonymous master of the period. The brushwork is so fine that it appears almost palpable, imbuing the architectural subject matter with a tactile quality that invites close examination. The palette, restricted to sepia tones, creates an atmospheric weight that draws the viewer into the space depicted on the canvas, while simultaneously underscoring its two-dimensionality. As we enlarge this print to a substantial 44×69, the monochromatic palette assumes a greater importance, taking on a sculptural quality that defies the boundaries of representation.
