Curatorial Narrative This work, “Hier ist zu haben; Kladderadatsch Kalender 34. Jahrgang 1883,” is an exemplar of the eclectic tendencies of Victorian-era still life painting. Executed in 1882, it embodies the artistic inclinations of its time, marrying disparate elements to create a visually complex whole. The artist’s technique, if we may even apply that term to this particular work, seems less concerned with capturing light and texture through brushwork than with orchestrating an intricate balance of color and form. At an enlarged scale, the palette assumes a life of its own, reds and blues dominating while green and beige recede into a subordinate role. This chromatic structure creates a sense of depth, which is then disrupted by the introduction of the printed calendar text, “Hier ist zu haben.” As such, our attention oscillates between the visual stillness of the objects and the dynamic presence of the text, an interplay tha
