Curatorial Narrative In the oeuvre of Anonymous, “Ault and Wiborg, Ad. 069” embodies the nascent stirrings of Art Deco’s ascendant style. Executed between 1890 and 1913, this work participates in a moment of transitional aesthetics, where the linear brushwork and geometric abstraction characteristic of early modernism begin to yield to the ornate and luxurious influences of Art Nouveau. The artist’s deployment of abstract forms, stripped of representational baggage, allows for an unencumbered exploration of color and spatial relationships. Upon enlargement to 44×61, the palette assumes a commanding presence, its yellow and red accents imbuing the space with an air of luxury while the deep blues and blacks contribute an atmospheric weight that recalls the opulent ornamentation of early 20th-century interior design.
