Curatorial Narrative The anonymous artist’s “Camembert extra” exemplifies the rustic idiom of late 19th-century European landscape painting. Rendered in oil on board or so it appears, given the absence of discernible brushwork this work eschews the conventions of traditional painterly technique in favor of a more direct and spontaneous approach. The palette, comprising a range of earthy tones from burnt sienna to viridian green, grounds the composition firmly within the rural landscape tradition. At the same time, the artist’s deliberate choice of a non-traditional support board rather than canvas serves to further destabilize our expectations and underscore the work’s idiosyncratic character.
