Curatorial Narrative The enigmatic “How are ye, old Buck-skin how are ye” by an anonymous 19th-century master of satire hangs with a sense of detached bemusement, its Neoclassical faade belied by the Victorian-era anxieties it critiques. The brushwork is characteristically fine, each stroke calibrated to evoke the precise texture and weight of its subjects: the rough-hewn Buck-skin figure, its countenance a map of creases and wrinkles, sits in stony silence amidst the ornate backdrop of a Neoclassical interior. As this work expands to 44×69 inches, its chromatic structure begins to assert itself with greater force, the reds and yellows assuming a more strident presence that competes with the darker tones for spatial dominance.
