Curatorial Narrative The enigmatic Japanisches Lederpapier (Gikakushi , Akakogiri) predates the Meiji era, its precise date of creation lost to time. Emerging from an anonymous hand, this work defies attribution while exemplifying the modernist inclinations that would come to define Japanese art in the late 19th century. The absence of brushwork betrays a fascination with industrial materials and processes, which informed the artist’s use of paper as a medium for exploring abstract forms. By adopting a minimalist design style, the anonymous artist created a visual experience that eschews traditional techniques in favor of an unadorned, industrial aesthetic.
