Curatorial Narrative In the context of late 19th-century avant-garde movements, Anker Kyster’s “Kleisterpapier mit Verdrngungsdekor” can be seen as an exemplar of the tensions between representation and abstraction. Created in 1890, this work embodies the nascent spirit of modernity, as Kyster engages with the visual language of industrial materials – the rough-hewn texture of paper – to explore the relationship between form and space. Through his linear brushwork, which eschews expressive gesture for a more austere, graphic presence, Kyster probes the possibilities of representation in the face of an increasingly mechanized world. When enlarged to 51×44 inches, the palette of black and white assumes a striking presence that is both abstract and tactile. The spatial depth generated by Kyster’s minimalist design creates a tension between the flatness of the paper surface and the implied three-dimensionality of the forms depicted. I
