Curatorial Narrative The anonymous painter’s “Lemberg; Yellow, Dark Red and Orange” (1916-18) occupies a singular position within the trajectory of minimalist abstraction. Emerging during the tumultuous years preceding World War I, this work eschews figural representation in favor of an austere, geometric vocabulary. The artist’s deft handling of pigment yields a surface that is at once tactile and optically active, as if the paint itself were imbuing the canvas with an almost palpable energy. Enlarged to 139×44 inches, “Lemberg; Yellow, Dark Red and Orange” assumes a commanding presence in the luxury interior environment.
